Some love stories have a way of coming full circle. Ryan and Haley were high school sweethearts, and after life took them in different directions for a while, they eventually found their way back to one another. Hearing their story made photographing this moment feel even sweeter—almost as though this was where they were always meant to end up.
Ryan originally had an entirely different proposal planned. He was going to propose in Nantucket a few weeks later, but there was one small problem: he was pretty sure Haley was onto him.
So, with a family trip to Rhode Island already on the calendar, he changed course—and quickly!
Ryan reached out to me pretty last minute, and together we came up with a plan for a quiet spot along the Rhode Island coast. His sisters were completely in on it. They took Haley shopping in Newport for the day and casually suggested afterward that they knew a gorgeous spot they had to visit because it was supposedly one of those perfect Rhode Island Instagram locations.
Meanwhile, Ryan and I were already there getting everything ready. He picked up beautiful blue hydrangeas and champagne, we chose just the right spot, and then we waited.
And somehow, he completely pulled it off.
Haley walked down toward the water having absolutely no idea what was waiting for her. Her reaction when she realized what was happening was wonderful—and the happiness between these two afterward was impossible to miss.
We spent the rest of the evening wandering along the rocks, popping champagne, taking photographs and letting them enjoy those first few moments of being engaged. And then, as if Rhode Island wanted to participate in the surprise too, the sky turned into the dreamiest soft pink and peach sunset.
From high school sweethearts, to finding one another again, to a surprise proposal beside the ocean—some stories just feel like they were always meant to find their way here.
Congratulations, Ryan & Haley. I’m so happy I got to photograph this chapter of yours.
