Instead of dressing up, they're simply going to follow one of their favorite running routes, stopping at a scenic overlook where I'll be waiting discreetly to capture the proposal. I absolutely love that because it reflects who they are. Some couples choose champagne and dress clothes before dinner. Others choose hiking boots, sneakers, or sandy feet after a walk on the beach. There isn't a right or wrong way to propose—only the way that feels like you.

A Brenton Point Proposal
"Let's go back to where we first said, 'I love you.'"
Some proposals are about finding the most breathtaking view. Others are about returning to the place where a relationship quietly changed forever.
This wonderful couple traveled from New York to Newport to get engaged, but they didn't choose Brenton Point simply because it's beautiful. They chose it because years earlier, while standing there together, they said "I love you" for the very first time. When he reached out to me, he knew exactly where he wanted to ask one of the biggest questions of his life. His only concern was making sure we found the exact spot.
In the weeks leading up to the proposal, we exchanged maps, coordinates, and photographs to make sure everything was perfect. On the day of the proposal, I even sent him updated photos from Brenton Point so he could compare landmarks and confirm I was waiting in exactly the right place. We talked through a few nearby options just in case, but his heart was set on recreating that meaningful moment.
I thought that was incredibly thoughtful.
Rather than choosing a location because it was popular or impressive, he chose the place that already held one of the most important memories in their relationship. It wasn't just where he proposed—it was where they first realized they had found something extraordinary together.
When they arrived, I quietly blended into the scenery, camera ready, trying my best to look like just another visitor enjoying the ocean views. A few moments later, he dropped to one knee, and she said yes.
As photographers, we're invited into people's lives for just a short time. Many of my clients are local families whom I watch grow over the years, but proposal clients often travel here from all over the country. I may never see this couple again, yet for a few unforgettable minutes I had the privilege of witnessing one of the happiest days of their lives. That's something I'll never take for granted.

A Castle Hill Proposal
Planning the perfect surprise means preparing for the unexpected.
This wonderful couple traveled from New Jersey to Newport for a vacation, but he had a much bigger plan in mind. He had reserved one of the most iconic proposal locations in Rhode Island—Castle Hill Lighthouse—and was ready to ask the biggest question of his life.
Castle Hill has become one of Newport's premier proposal destinations, and for good reason. Between the dramatic rocky shoreline, sweeping ocean views, and the historic lighthouse perched above Narragansett Bay, it feels timeless and unforgettable. Most days, you can walk out to the lighthouse and have the area almost entirely to yourselves. But every once in a while, timing has other plans.
As we were preparing for the proposal, another photographer arrived with a different couple who also planned to get engaged at the lighthouse. Thankfully, because my groom had reserved the location through Castle Hill, the staff already knew his proposal was scheduled. They kindly escorted the other photographer away before either couple saw one another, allowing them to choose another beautiful location nearby instead.
I couldn't help but think how disappointing it would have been if my couple had arrived to find another proposal already happening. After months of planning, you want that moment to feel like it's yours alone. It's one of those little details that most people never think about until it's too late.
Planning a surprise proposal isn't just about choosing a beautiful location. And can we take a moment to appreciate her dress? It looked like it belonged in the pages of a bridal magazine. It moved beautifully in the ocean breeze and was absolutely perfect against the rugged coastline.
One of my favorite portraits from this session was taken along the rocky cliffs overlooking the lighthouse. The perspective makes it feel as though they're perched on the edge of the world, with the Atlantic stretching endlessly behind them. It's dramatic, romantic, and completely unique—exactly the kind of image that stands out from the traditional engagement photographs you'll see everywhere else.
