Today has been one of those days.
I'm getting ready for my son's birthday party, trying to finish the yard, catch up on laundry, answer emails, update my website, and somehow remember everything else that needs to get done before guests arrive. If you're a parent, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.
It's funny how the biggest milestones in our children's lives are often the busiest ones. Birthdays, graduations, family reunions, holidays—we spend so much time making them special that we sometimes forget to preserve them.
As a photographer, I know better.
As a mom... I'm guilty of it too.
I catch myself thinking, "I'll take pictures later," only to realize the candles have already been blown out, everyone is eating cake, and I've spent more time hosting than enjoying the moment.
That's one of the reasons I also photograph birthday parties.
Hiring a photographer isn't about having perfectly posed pictures. It's about giving yourself permission to be present. You get to laugh with your kids, help open presents, sing Happy Birthday, and make memories instead of worrying about whether you remembered to take enough photos.
And if your child's birthday has already come and gone, don't worry—it's never too late. Childhood doesn't happen in just one day. Some of my favorite family sessions have happened weeks after a birthday, simply because that's when life finally slowed down enough for everyone to enjoy it.
As I'm getting ready for my own son's birthday this week, I'm reminding myself of the same thing I tell my clients every day: these moments pass far too quickly.
Don't wait for the perfect time.
Today's memories are worth preserving, exactly as they are.
If you've been thinking about family photos, birthday party photography, or simply documenting this stage of life before it changes again, I'd love to help tell your story.
